I’m Richard, the founder of Raayy.

At age 49, I had a potential skin cancer detected on my face (Squamous Cell Carcinoma). This was a penny drop moment to make me stop, think and work out what is happening.

It was instantly clear to me that this issue hadn’t come from one bad day in the sun. It was decades of normal UK life adding up. Playing & watching sport, weekends away, park life, beer gardens. Walking the dog. Standard run of the mill stuff.

The more I looked into it - NHS guidance, skin cancer awareness, Melanoma UK - the clearer it became. In the UK, I believe we’re under-educated on this topic. SPF is still largely seen as something only for sunny holidays. Great for a couple of weeks in the heat, then forgotten about until the next trip abroad.

But its not as simple as that

UV exposure is an all year-round thing. It passes through cloud. It comes through glass. It’s there on bland grey days when you don’t feel at risk. You won’t see it. You won’t feel it. But it builds, compounding slowly, over decades.

Both my father and my father-in-law have skin cancers on their faces. Different lives in different parts of the UK, same pattern. Long-term, silent exposure.

The data backs it up. Up to 90% of visible skin ageing is linked to UV exposure, and around 1 in 10 cancers in the UK now are associated with UV. This isn’t pinned to extreme moments, it’s from normal everyday exposure, day by day, month on month, year by year.

So the next question for me became simple. What can actually work in real daily life for the majority of people - because many SPF products simply don’t.
