UVA vs UVB Simplified

When it comes to UV damage, there are two main players: UVA and UVB. Each behaves differently, each brings risk, and both cause cumulative harm over time.

UVA – The Ager

  • Accounts for the majority of UV radiation that reaches your skin.
  • Penetrates deeper into the skin and passes through glass and cloud cover.
  • Linked with long-term damage such as collagen breakdown, sagging, and uneven tone. Source: PubMed Central – The Role of UVA in Skin Aging
  • Damage happens quietly over time, often without any visible warning signs.

UVB – The Burner

  • Stronger during midday, summer months, and holidays.
  • Causes sunburn, redness, and surface-level DNA damage.
  • Short bursts of UVB exposure (sunburns) increase long-term cancer risk. Source: Cancer Research UK – How UV Causes Cancer
  • Even when you don’t burn, UVA is still causing invisible damage.

What To Do

  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ that protects against both UVA and UVB.
  • Apply liberally to all exposed skin every morning, whatever the weather.
  • Reapply if outdoors for long periods, playing sport, or at the beach.
  • Add simple extras: hat, sunglasses, and shade at midday.
