UVA vs UVB Simplified
When it comes to UV damage, there are two main players: UVA and UVB. Each behaves differently, each brings risk, and both cause cumulative harm over time.
UVA – The Ager
- Accounts for the majority of UV radiation that reaches your skin.
- Penetrates deeper into the skin and passes through glass and cloud cover.
- Linked with long-term damage such as collagen breakdown, sagging, and uneven tone. Source: PubMed Central – The Role of UVA in Skin Aging
- Damage happens quietly over time, often without any visible warning signs.
UVB – The Burner
- Stronger during midday, summer months, and holidays.
- Causes sunburn, redness, and surface-level DNA damage.
- Short bursts of UVB exposure (sunburns) increase long-term cancer risk. Source: Cancer Research UK – How UV Causes Cancer
- Even when you don’t burn, UVA is still causing invisible damage.
What To Do
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ that protects against both UVA and UVB.
- Apply liberally to all exposed skin every morning, whatever the weather.
- Reapply if outdoors for long periods, playing sport, or at the beach.
- Add simple extras: hat, sunglasses, and shade at midday.
